Open Assistant

The project collected a large dataset of human-generated conversations, preference rankings, and assistant responses through a community contribution effort, then used this data to train open-source assistant models on the LLaMA and Pythia base model families.

The dataset collected by the projectOpenAssistant Conversations (OASST)has itself become a significant open-source resource for the AI research community, providing high-quality human-generated multi-turn conversational data with preference labels that enable RLHF training for other open-source projects.

The data collection methodology involved a web platform where volunteers contributed conversations as either users or assistants, with quality ranking provided by additional annotators, producing a dataset comparable in format to what proprietary RLHF datasets are assumed to contain.

Open-source AI researchers studying instruction tuning and RLHF alignment, developers building applications on aligned open models, and advocates for AI transparency and democratization supported and used OpenAssistant as a community-driven alternative to proprietary AI assistants.

The project represents an important moment in the open-source LLM movementdemonstrating that high-quality conversational AI training data and capable instruction-tuned models could be developed through community contribution rather than requiring the resources of a large technology company.
