Positioned as a fully open alternative to proprietary deep research tools like OpenAI's Deep Research and Perplexity's research mode, it allows organizations to run the complete research pipeline on their own infrastructure with transparent, inspectable code.

The agent operates through a multi-step reasoning loop: it decomposes a research question into sub-queries, retrieves and reads relevant sources, identifies gaps in its understanding, formulates follow-up searches, and iterates until it can produce a comprehensive synthesis.

The architecture supports configurable search backends (Bing, Google, Tavily, SerpAPI) and LLM backends (Qwen, GPT-4o, Claude, DeepSeek), making it adaptable to different infrastructure preferences and geographic availability constraints.

Tongyi Deep Research is open-source under the Apache 2.0 license and is part of the broader Qwen ecosystem from Alibaba Cloud.

It is designed for use cases including competitive intelligence, academic literature review, technical due diligence, market research, and policy analysis contexts where thorough, multi-source research is required but the cost and opacity of proprietary research tools is a concern.

Self-hosting the agent ensures that research queries and resulting reports remain within organizational boundaries.
